Happy Thanksgiving!

I have always loved holidays, and as I get older they are even more special to me. I am truly thankful for my wonderful family and friends, the opportunity to live in the best city in the world, and to be embarking on an exciting new chapter in my amazing life with Mr. V. Not to mention my thankfulness for our adopted kitten Raja, the best addition to our family I could have ever imagined.

Darkness has fallen upon Manhattan this evening, and the flickering candles in our apartment are creating the most beautiful warm light as the shadows dance across the walls. The chillier it gets outside, the more I relish in having a warm, delicious home-cooked meal and big glass of wine. Our table is set and the food is on the stove, and I can't wait to pull up my chair and enjoy tonight's meal with my family and dear friend. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

Birthday Brunching

Mr. V's birthday was this past Friday, and we celebrated on Sunday with friends over brunch at August in the West Village. It was a low-key and delicious way to ring in a new year for him, and we all really enjoyed it. He even got a candle with his french toast!

The baked eggs with mozzarella were also delectable, and the Staub cocotte they came in had me dreaming of our wedding registry (cocottes are definitely making the list!). I'm so lucky to be marrying Mr. V,  the most handsome, kind, supportive man in the world. Happy birthday to my dear fiancé, and I can't wait for a lifetime of celebrations together!!

The Great White Pumpkin

I found this beautiful pumpkin at the farmer's market in Union Square on Monday. It was the only white one in the whole stand, and I just felt like it had my name on it. Raja is pretty smitten with my choice, and he's spent a lot of time cozying up with the new fall addition to our apartment.

Funnily enough, after spending some time in one stall picking out veggies, I was told that I was actually standing in a movie set. Only in New York! Thank goodness the rest of the market was "real", and I found a fresh spaghetti squash that I baked and then sautéed with truffle oil, garlic, a bit of chili, and topped with local handmade cow's cheese...It was delicious, and the best way to celebrate the chilly fall weather in New York.

Chicago | A Week in the Windy City

I spent last week on a business trip to Illinois, where the gallery I work for had a booth at ExpoChicago. I had never been to the famed midwestern town previously, and I have to say, I'm totally infatuated. After more than four years living in New York, I'm well adjusted to big city life (read: take-out, laundry service, culture on every corner), but Chicago has all of that, plus a few things NYC is missing...Like cleanliness, and space! It's filled with skyscrapers and taxis, but it feels so roomy. Apartments, grocery stores, and restaurants are spacious, which was a welcome change from the tightness of Manhattan...

Speaking of restaurants, there was a long list that I had always wanted to try in Chicago, and I was lucky enough to have meals at Pump Room, RPM, Topolobampo, Table Fifty-Two, Boka, Blackbird, and Green Zebra. For me, Table Fifty-Two by Art Smith was the biggest disappointment, and RPM and Green Zebra were the biggest surprises (yum). And Topolobampo...Oh, Topolobampo. This was hands down one of the best meals I've ever had. I had been dying to try Rick Bayless's food for years, and was so happy to eat there. For my main course, I had the Marisqueria en Mojo Blanco y Negro, which is Arctic char with roasted Maine lobster, mojo of black and white garlic, savory white camote flan, sesame-glazed cipollini onions, and smoky green beans. It was supreme! The complexity of flavors was outstanding, and the seafood was cooked perfectly. Also, everyone must try Bayless's twenty-nine ingredient mole sauce, his trademark. That night at Topolo was made even better by the fact that Bayless sat in the booth right next to me, talking strategy with his chef, throughout my meal. I can't wait to go back to Chicago soon, and take Mr. V there to try it (he's never been either, so we're hoping to go for a weekend late this year). What a great trip!

Summer Dressing

I'm back in New York, where the heat has finally (somewhat) broken and I no longer feel like I'm going to melt into the sidewalk with each step. All of these changes in temperature have me yearning to find a few sundresses that I can really live in this summer, such as these great looks, captured by The Sartorialist...

The breeze and beauty of these three ensembles would definitely make beating the warmth a little easier, and certainly more stylish!

Happy Weekend!

Mr. V and I are heading to brunch in TriBeCa to toast our friends who got engaged this week (yay!). Yesterday, we attended our other friends' wedding in the city, which was a fantastic lunch-time bash. They already had a stunning week-long wedding in Udiapur (that we got to attend!), and yesterday's nuptials allowed them to celebrate again with more friends and family stateside. I had never been to a daytime wedding, and it was a lot of fun!

This weekend I'm lucky enough to have a rare two days off with Mr. V, so I can't wait to get outside and soak up the warm, sunny weather in NYC and get some extra time with him. Happy weekend to you all!

A Surprise Engagement

This past Saturday, in this little walled garden oasis in the West Village, the most wonderful man proposed to me.

Needless to say, it was the most special and perfect day of my life. I sure do love you, Mr. V.

NY Home | Chelsea Loft

Casa Vogue recently featured the stunning apartment of my friend and former colleague André Viana, an art dealer, and his partner André Mellone, an architect. Their loft, located in the heart of West Chelsea, is steps from the High Line and filled with an impeccable collection of furniture and art, including coveted pieces by Wade Guyton, Jacob Kassay, and Tauba Auerbach.

In their living room, two leather club chairs and a folding chair designed by Hans Wegner sit around two coffee tables, an aluminum piece from 1960s and a three-legged walnut table designed by T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings.

André Mellone's beautiful design renderings carefully plan for each element of the home, which feels balanced, warm, and layered, due to antique elements nestled among the contemporary architectural lines of the apartment. Their superb space was created by uniting two adjacent units in the building, the combination of which was designed and overseen by Mellone.

Three silver paintings by Jacob Kassay preside over a long marble and iron French bistro table, which is flanked by six antique Biedermeier dining chairs dating from 1840.

Spring Style | Adapting to the Elements

For the past few weeks, the weather has been conflicted in typical spring fashion, quickly changing from warm and sunny to cool and rainy. This makes fashion choices a bit harder, as one has to be able to slip between sunshine and sudden showers without sacrificing too much style...

For me, this look perfectly personifies the style of many New Yorkers at this time of year - half sweet, with the tied blouse and red lips, and half tough, with the rolled jeans and motorcycle boots. A perfect pairing while the weather is still waffling!

Monday Musings

Today was an especially lovely one, as my parents are in town visiting, and my Mom and I went to one of the final tapings of The Martha Stewart Show this morning. It was so much fun - the super talented Michael Smith was one of her guests! We also had two delicious meals today, brunch at Meme and dinner at Móle, which have left us all feeling happy and full.

Martha did a great segment on flowers, focusing on vertical gardening and planting succulents...It made me want to run out and buy a bevy of terra cotta pots and beautiful spring flowers. I currently have a beautiful bunch of ranunculus on my dining table that makes me smile each morning...Fresh blooms are  the most wonderful addition to any house!

Feeling the Heat

New York was a scorching 85 degrees today, which, despite the cool and steady breeze, immediately made me want to dive headfirst into a pool...

While it's nice to feel that summer is almost here, it was a bit unexpected to walk out my door and feel the rush of warmth on my face. That being said, I'm so excited for the things that come with the change of season...Vacations, outdoor dining, and the general merriment that accompanies the summer months. I can't wait!

Dining Out | Easter Dinner at Spice Market

Yesterday after brunch, Mr. V, our friends, and I took a walk through the West Village to enjoy the absolute perfect weather that graced the city. We headed to the outdoor biergarten at The Standard to sit outside under The High Line and drink some cocktails, and then we went to Spice Market for dinner (another Jean-Georges favorite, in addition to ABC Kitchen and Perry St), and had the most delicious family-style feast.

A few highlights were the Lobster Summer Rolls with Citrus-Dill Gele Sriracha Emulsion, Cod with Malaysian Chili Sauce with Thai Basil, Vegetables in Green Curry, Chili-Garlic Egg Noodles with Seared Shrimp and Star Anise, and the Ginger Fried Rice. It was all so delicious! A bit of an unorthodox Easter meal, but wonderful nonetheless. It was great to be out and about in the warm weather, and then end the day with such a nice dinner, all in the company of friends - a New York style holiday!

Happy Easter!

Aren't these flowers beautiful? They would be a great accent to any table today.

Mr. V and I are off to meet our friends at the wonderful Joseph Leonard for a brunch filled with bloody marys, bellinis, and food from their to-die-for brunch menu. Yum! I hope everyone has a delicious meal this Easter Sunday!

Happy Weekend!

Isn't this Rosemary and Rhubarb cocktail from bon appétit beautiful? I'd love to try it...It's ideal for this gorgeous spring weather. I am so excited to spend as much time outside as possible on this beautiful weekend...New York style, so that means eating and drinking at sidewalk cafés and taking a walk in Washington Square Park. Tonight Mr. V and I are headed to Alta for dinner with friends, and then to Sunday brunch tomorrow in the West Village. I hope you all have happy Easter or Passover celebrations! Here are a few links that I'm loving this week for you to enjoy...

Domino's Special Edition has already been spotted at the newsstands in New York! I can't wait to get a copy.

My obsession with Saipua's flower arrangements has only grown after seeing this fantastic wedding at the Gramercy Park Hotel.

Beyoncé's new Tumblr page.

Drake and Rihanna's new video.

This clear glass carafe would be a beautiful addition to a holiday table, as would this brass coaster (on sale!).

I'm dying to fix this Watermelon Radish Salad with Avocado Vinaigrette...Perfect for spring and summer!

Retail Therapy

The temperature was in the low seventies today, with bright sun shining and a cloudless sky. Dying to get outside and enjoy the weather, I went on a neighborhood walk this afternoon that turned into a mini shopping trip.

I stopped at Ciao for Now on 10th Street for an iced skim latte and vegan banana bread, then headed to browse the stores on Bleeker. I came away with the loveliest seafoam lucite earrings from Alexis Bittar, a classic gold bracelet from Michael Kors, and a new candle from Diptyque. I also fell in love with a few pieces from Sandro, which I will be saving for this spring! I've decided to shop for a color palette of crisp white, tan, mint green, and melon tones for the upcoming warm months. This breezy white shirt dress perfectly embodies how I'd like to be dressing as the heat rises - classically summery and chic.

Dining Out | Annisa

Last night was a special one, as Mr. V took me to Annisa to celebrate our four year anniversary. Tucked away on Barrow Street in the West Village, Annisa is the flagship restaurant of Anita Lo, who has risen to culinary fame due to her restaurant's critical praise, a successful cookbook, and stints on Iron Chef and Top Chef Masters.

Mr. V and I met at the restaurant due to our work schedules, which really made it feel like a date (cohabitors will especially understand this). The decor at Annisa is minimalist, and manages to be cozy and quiet, largely due to its intimate size. To start the night, Mr. V ordered a bourbon on the rocks and I decided on a crisp glass of a Sauvignon Blanc from Burgundy. We were greeted with a very nice amuse-bouche, two tiny pastry shells filled with a white bean purée and topped with a marinated anchovy, which were flavorful and set a nice tone for the meal.

We decided to share two appetizers and two entrées, which our server offered to pre-split and serve in courses for us. We began with a very delicate dish, Eggplant with Two Turkish Chilis in Yogurt Water. The texture of the eggplant was highlighted by its deliciously subtle preparation, and it offered a slight kick of spice on my final bite. We followed that with the Cauliflower Gnocco with Hazelnuts and Sheep's Cheese, a rich and truly delectable bite that was Mr. V's favorite of the night.

To start our main courses, we shared the Miso Marinated Sable with Crispy Silken Tofu in Bonito Broth. A hallmark dish of Lo and a nod to her Chinese heritage, this was perhaps the most memorable plate for me due to the complexity of the tasty broth. We also devoured the Duo of Arctic Char with Savoy Cabbage, Pine Nuts, and Dill. The fish was perfectly cooked, and the cabbage was a delicious accompaniment to the hearty and boldly flavored protein.

For dessert, Mr. V had the Tasting of Chocolate and Malted Desserts, four small but powerful cocao bites. I ordered the Pecan and Salted Butterscotch Beignets with Bourbon Milk Ice, which were refreshing, sweet, and succulent. I'm not typically a dessert person, and I found this to be a wonderful end to the meal. After the desserts, we were brought three treats as final bites: miniature pineapple popsicles, strips of candied ginger, and frozen mint chocolate truffles...All were delightful! Overall, the food at Annisa felt pure and unpretentious, and the service was prompt without being overly attentive. I'd highly recommend it for a night out of your own! I was very lucky to have such a scrumptious meal with Mr. V, who is always the best company. This anniversary felt particularly special, and I feel so lucky to have him by my side. We finished the evening with a nightcap at Joseph Leonard, a restaurant just around the corner - another favorite that I'll write about in the future!

Art | Ragnar Kjartansson

A bevy of art fairs are descending upon New York this week, prompting art lovers to bounce around the city and soak in as much visual culture as possible. Today, The Armory Show opened its doors to a flood of visitors, each of whom were greeted by Scandinavian Pain, a large reddish-pink neon by Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson.

Kjartansson originally conceived Scandinavian Pain as part of a durational performance that took place in front of a barn, pictured above, in a rural area of Norway made famous by Edvard Münch. At the Armory this week, the neon is installed over the champagne bar at the fair, and the irony and humor of the tortured phrase glowing over a sea of imbibing collectors was certainly entertaining. This week, I'll also be at the Art Dealers Association of America's Art Show and the opening of the Independent tomorrow night. I'm looking forward to continuing this busy week in the art world!

NY Home | East Village Duplex

I fell in love with this home, which graces the cover of the newest Architectural Digest, at first sight. I cannot believe that this is New York City apartment...Look at all of the space, light, ceiling height, and outdoor area!

The 2,500 square-foot penthouse channels a Hollywood home, effortlessly blending touches of glamour with comfortable fabrics and furniture (one of the owners is a long-term Ralph Lauren protégé). It looks like the perfect city oasis!

Cheerful Celebrations

Last night, Mr. V and I went to the wedding of our friends at The Green Building in Brooklyn. We had so much fun catching up with friends and enjoying their sweet vows (it was a tearjerker), delicious food, and the endlessly entertaining photo booth. The room and decor were gorgeous...Strings of lit orbs cascading over the window to create the altar, hanging brass chandeliers, exposed brick, and mason jars filled with tealights.

There were so many personal touches - the bride and groom grew up together in Minnesota, so her family brought pretty birch logs from their home state to line the aisle, and his mother sewed plaid fabric into napkins for each place setting. They thought of every little detail for their big night, and it was lovely. For their send off, we lit sparklers and cheered as the happy couple left the party - such a nice end to the evening!

Penthouse in the Sky

A beautiful view of Diane von Fustenberg's live/work space in the Meatpacking District...

A building I've walked by hundreds of times (you can glimpse the geometric rooftop from the street, as well as from the High Line), and still find amazing. A true gem in the heart of Manhattan! See the interior here, from the new issue of Architectural Digest.
